Op against Sheesha smoking to start soon

To discourage smoking at public places and sale of tobacco to underage children and teenager, City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) would launch a crackdown on Sheesha Cafés in the district after Muharram-ul-Haram.

The decision was taken at a meeting of District Tobacco Control Committee held the other day. District Coordination Officer (DCO) Saqib Zafar presided over the meeting, which was attended by federal government’s coordinator on tobacco control Dr Aftab Ahmed, EDO (Health) Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal and other police and local government officials.

It was decided that Tobacco Control Committee will be formed at tehsil level to discourage smoking at public places and sale of tobacco to underage children and teenagers.

The federal government coordinator on tobacco control Dr Aftab Ahmed informed the meeting that ban on smoking at public places had reduced the sale of tobacco companies by 10 percent.

The DCO directed the Rawal and Potohar Towns administrations to identify the areas where Sheesha Cafés were located.

He said that health department and District Food Controller in collaboration with local police would raid these cafés after Muharram 10.

DCO said that after 10th of Muharram, the CDGR would fix a day to observe anti-tobacco day each year at local level, adding that walks and seminars will also be arranged on this day to create awareness among the residents of the city of the problems of tobacco.

HI tobacco exports up 26%; may exceed record $924-m

Virginia tobacco exports surged in the first half of the current fiscal registering a 26 per cent growth, according to Tobacco Board Chairman G. Kamala Vardhana Rao.

He said here on Friday that there was 30 per cent growth during the period (April-Sept) in tobacco leaf exports and 10 per cent in export of tobacco products in rupee terms.

During the period, 1,12,472 tonnes of leaf tobacco was exported and 15,582 tonnes of tobacco products against 95,685 tonnes and 17,941 tonnes respectively during the previous year (2011-12).

The leaf tobacco fetched Rs 1,800 crore and tobacco products Rs 496 crore during the current financial year against Rs 1,380.46 crore and Rs 449.69 crore respectively during 2011-12.

The Chairman said the outlook was pretty rosy and the exports may touch, or even exceed, the record figure of $924 million by the end of the financial year.

During the first half of the year, Belgium topped the list of importers with 16,955 tonnes followed by Indonesia with 8,742 tonnes, the US with 7,960 tonnes, Russia with 6,694 tonnes, Egypt 6,348 tonnes, the UAE 5,345 tonnes and several others.

Strong demand for electronic cigarettes

The market for electronic cigarettes is growing rapidly in the UK, where there are now an estimated 650,000 users and associated sales worth £60 million, according to a press note released by VIP Electronic Cigarette through PRNewswire.

In order to meet demand for these products, VIP says that it has undergone significant expansion in recent months.

Having expanded into retail, the company now operates a number of kiosks and booths nationwide.

At the same time, the VIP range is sold to around 300 pharmacies and newsagents in theUK.

VIP says it has plans to increase its retail expansion further next year.
